ABSTRACT

If the managers are able to understand, predict and control employee behavior, then they should have the knowledge of what the employees want from their jobs. It is essential for a manager to understand what really motives employees, without making just an assumption. The study was carried out to investigate the effect of motivation on employees. Specifically, the study seek to determine the various types of incentives necessary for employee motivation; to determine causes of poor or absence of motivation in organizations and to determine if there is a relationship between employee’s motivation and organizational productivity. The study employed quantitative descriptive research design to examine the effect of motivation on employees in service industry. In this study the study sample constitute of all members of BEDC head-office in No. 5 Akpakpava street, Benin. The findings from the study revealed that the employees are motivated by both extrinsic and intrinsic incentives. These includes good working condition, financial benefits, recognition and appreciation, growth opportunities and general welfare; the causes of poor or absence of motivation in some service companies could be attributed to organizational policies, poor intermediary roles, organizational resources and organizational culture; and there is a relationship between employee motivation and organizational productivity.
